Every week at EliteInmates.com, we highlight one of our members who is looking to connect with the outside world in a meaningful way. This week, we’re excited to introduce you to Jesse James Puckett, a 41-year-old currently incarcerated at Washington State Penitentiary (WSP). Jesse is someone with a story worth sharing—and even more than that, a heart worth knowing.
Getting to Know Jesse
Born in Idaho Falls but raised in Olympia, Washington, Jesse reflects fondly on his early years. “I had an amazing childhood,” he shares, crediting those memories for shaping the compassionate and kindhearted man he has become today.
When asked how he would describe himself to someone meeting him for the first time, Jesse didn’t hesitate: “I am kind and very caring.” Friends have told him that he’s both “compassionate” and “funny,” qualities that have carried him through life’s toughest moments.
One surprising fact? Jesse is the proud father of two sets of twins—a rare and joyful blessing. But life hasn’t been without hardship. He speaks openly about the devastating loss of his own twin brother, saying, “When my twin brother died, a part of me died. I made some mistakes, but I am striving every day to right those wrongs and remain free on the inside and the outside.”
Mindset & Motivation
Despite challenges, Jesse carries hope for the future. “What keeps me going each day is that I have a chance to start over,” he says with determination.
He’s learned to take ownership of his time and growth while incarcerated: “The biggest lesson I learned is how to do my own time.” Much of his strength comes from the people who raised him—especially his father, who Jesse calls “the greatest man I have ever known, very selfless.” His parents have been married for 52 years, and that lifelong loyalty inspires Jesse to aim for deep, meaningful bonds of his own.
The Connections He Hopes to Find
More than anything, Jesse longs for real, lasting connections. “I would like to find someone I can build something amazing with,” he says.
When it comes to relationships, he values honesty above all else. Loyalty, to him, is “no wandering elsewhere and being 100 with the significant other.” He describes his way of expressing love as “tenderness, attention, and everything that comes with it.”
As for his love language, Jesse shares: “Physical touch, words, and I love with everything I have.” He dreams of showing his affection through simple but meaningful gestures—“flowers, date nights, and tenderness always.”
Passions, Hobbies & Talents
Sports and the outdoors bring Jesse peace. He lights up when talking about his passions: “I love competitive softball. I love dirt bikes or just being with the people I love the most.” He also mentions that he has a knack for sports in general, with wrestling being one of his hidden strengths.
Notably, Jesse once worked as a wildland firefighter, bravely battling 28 wildfires while serving on a Department of Natural Resources crew. It’s a role that gave him purpose and pride. Looking ahead, he says, “I love being a wildland firefighter,” and envisions pursuing that path again, along with welding—a trade he hopes to master.
Music, Movies & Inspiration
Jesse has a diverse taste in music that reveals his layered personality. “I love new country, I love love songs because of how they make you feel. I love pop music…and some metal like Five Finger Death Punch.”
His favorite film is The Peanut Butter Falcon, a heartfelt story that celebrates joy, resilience, and finding purpose against the odds. “One of the main characters is mentally handicap and I love to see the joy and happiness he shows and [how he’s] able to enjoy life just as it is.” That outlook resonates deeply with Jesse, who is striving to embrace life’s present moments.
When asked what the movie of his own life would be called, Jesse answered simply but powerfully: “Overcoming.”
Life, Dreams & Reentry
Jesse has big dreams for life after release: “Life after release for me looks like working hard, making a meaningful life for myself.”
He’s eager to build new relationships, live a life with meaning, and stay far away from the mistakes of his past. “I see my life in 5 years leaving life of crime far behind me, and possibly owning my own business,” he says.
If given the chance to speak to young people, Jesse would be brutally honest about the dangers of the path he once walked. “If I had an opportunity to speak to young people I would tell them about my life and how royally screwed it up. Drugs are bad and will only lead you to a life of misery.”
Just for Fun
Jesse’s lighter side shines through in his fun answers, too. If given the chance, he’d have dinner with Jesus and his late twin brother, describing it as an “incredible” experience he wishes he could have.
He misses Chinese food the most—especially Main Chinese Buffet in Olympia, Washington—and looks forward to the day he can sit down to that first meal of freedom. Small joys like seeing others happy always lift his spirits.
And he holds tight to words of wisdom that remind him to live for today:
“Yesterday is history, today is a mystery, that is why it is called the Present.”
and
“The two most important days in life are the day you were born, and the day you find out why.”
